Bocage Virois: fears of drought in summer 2022 still on the minds of authorities
Calvados is on drought alert. The drinking water situation is worrying, particularly in the Virois region, which prompted the department to issue the alert.
The outlook was bleak in 2022. That summer, the Bocage Virois region reached “dramatic” levels. Drinking water was scarce. River and reservoir levels were considered too low. “The region was placed in a state of crisis”
Watering gardens was prohibited, as was fishing. Regulations were tightened to conserve water.
A plan was already in place in case of a shortage: water bottles would be provided to rural residents and cisterns would be installed for those living in Vire. In the end, the rain returned and the worst was avoided. It was a close call.
